Level Up Your 1st Birthday Photos: Creative Tips and Tricks

How to take your baby’s 1st birthday photos to the next level!

Your baby’s first birthday is a milestone worth celebrating, and what better way to remember it than with beautiful photos? Capturing this special day requires more than just snapping a few pictures; it involves creativity, planning, and a bit of know-how. Here are some expert tips to help you level up your 1st birthday photos and create lasting memories.

TIP #1 : CAKE SMASH ALTERNATIVE

  • Cake smashes are common for first birthday sessions. But ever think of doing something instead of a cake? If it is autumn, a pumpkin pie might be cute. If it is summer, maybe a cherry pie or ice cream sundae might be cute. Donuts, watermelons, and fruit pizzas are other options that I’ve seen.

TIP #2: MILK BATHS

  • Milk baths are my FAVORITE post cake smash “clean up” idea. Apples, florals, cookies, oranges, ferns, what ever! Some clients have cool clawfoot tubs to use and others incorporate buckets or galvanized tubs. Some have even put their child into lake water to rinse off. Regardless, they always make for cute and different photos!

Citrus, fruits, florals, & cookies….the sky is the limit!

Galvanized tubs are adorable to use but another tub or big bucket works too!

TIP #3: BRING ON THE FAMILY PHOTOS

  • How often do you have photos taken for your family? Might as well get the most bang for your buck by having some family portraits taken before the solos of your one year old.

TIP#4: FLOWERS NEED LOVE TOO

  • Balloon arches are still a staple, though I get very excited when we get florals into our backdrops!

TIP 5: GET CANDID!

Some of the best photos are unplanned. Candid shots capture genuine emotions and spontaneous moments. Let your child play, laugh, and explore while you photograph them naturally. Allow your baby to play with their favorite toys or interact with family members.

I can’t wait to hear what you come up with!
